transitive verb with preposition?
i don't understand how to explain the following:
e.g.nothing would prevent him from speaking.
prevent is a transitive verb but why there is a prepositional phrase
"from speaking"follow the word"him"?
perhaps you will not know what i mean,anyway,i am grateful to any feedback.

WELCOME!
Why do you think a prepositional phrase cannot follow the object of a verb?
I found the cat under the bed.

Nothing would prevent him from speaking.
(Not a teacher)
Explanations:
"Nothing" is a subject and "would" a modal in the sentence.
"Prevent" is a transitive verb that takes a direct object "him";
"from speaking" is a prepositional phrase used as a complement of the object "him".
"Prevent somebody/something (from) doing something" is a fixed collocation. (For details, please look up a dictionary.)
