Would yo consult me about the interpretation of one sentence?
Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I’m right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentence?
The BYU quarterback burned his in-state rivals with a touchdown pass in overtime, then blasted them with some scathing comments after the Cougars' (No. 19 BCS, No. 18 AP) 26-23 win over the Utes (No. 21 BCS, No. 22 AP).
burn = give a final touch to,
in-state = lie in state, said of a dead body ceremoniously exposed to public view before being interred
interred = to place in a grave or tomb; bury
in-state (adj) = obsolete
blast = criticize harshly or violently
scathing = marked by harshly abusive criticism
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards,
V.

Burned = embarrassed, shamed, defeated; blast = verbally attack, as you have.
