Hi everybody,
I have a grammar question, i don't know what is the right sentence :
1/ Are there some apples in the kitchen?
2/ Are there any apples in the kitchen?
I think the first no?
Please can someone answer my question
Thanks
1 - Are there some apples in the kitchen? --Incorrect
2 - Are there any apples in the kitchen? --Correct
Always use "any" instead of "some" for questions.
There are some apples in the kitchen--Correct
There are not any apples in the kitchen--Correct
There are not some apples in the kitchen--Incorrect
The sentence "there are not any apples in the kitchen" doesn't sound correct to me.
If you think that it doesn't sound natural, yes, I'd prefer "there are no apples..."
But if you are saying that this is grammatically incorrect, you should clarify me,
'cos after having read what you had written, I checked the web and found this Lesson 38 - Countable vs Uncountable Nouns - Some any a few a little much many - Learn English Online - Free Beginners Course - Unit 8. And honestly I've been confused a little.
I am not an english teacher and have never been to or lived in an English-speaking country, so it'd be silly for me to argue with a native-speaker about grammatical correctness of a sentence. So you should detail it why this was incorrect.
Thanks for your reply. It may indeed be strictly correct, I would just advise against it as it doesn't sound natural, not normatively acceptable.
Thank you so much for your replies
I was really confused with ths question
Thanks...
Hi Milady
Euncu is absolutely right
You can also used instead..
"Is there any apple in the kitchen"
(Not a teacher) Are there some apples in the kitchen? = I think (suspect) that there are; Are there any apples in the kitchen? = I really don't know and am asking you. For example, if you hear a noise in the next room, you would say, "Is there someone in there?" (You think there is.)
I agree with you. To me, I think it sounds incorrect if you say "any apples" in this sentence...."any apples" seem to be a question, now you are telling something to someone, so you should say "some apples".... If you would like to make a question, you would say "Anything else?", You would never say "Something else?"....
