    Default red-brick university

When I read this nonsense, I assumed Colin Hayfield was a wet-behind-the-ears, Left-wing, do-gooder fresh off a sociology course at a pretend red-brick university.

Could someone please tell me what the journalist means about the paragraph I quoted from an article of the Daily Mail?

I have got the info. about red-brick university from Wikipedia, but I don't understand why the journalist especially mentioned it here. Could you please explain it for me?

    Renown traditional old universities.

It is a term used in the UK for the new and untried "universities", which were often technical colleges or polytechnics upgraded to universities. They are rarely more than 100 years old, and usually a great deal younger.

The journalist is suggesting that Colin Hayfield did not have a particularly good education.

    Some "redbrick" universities are excellent.

True - but I am not sure that saying that is the intention of the journalist in this case.

I agree, but then one wouldn't expect a "journalist" like R. Littlejohn to be balanced in his writing.
