Dear all
I believe the following should be written as indirect speech. Can someone confirm/correct and explain why if it is different.
Just after that his six year old daughter, June, had appeared at the side of the car having been sent over with a message from Mrs Kieft and had said to him 'Mummy says, be careful'. What his daughter had said
Thank you
Alison
It's correct the underlined phrase stands as it is.'Mummy says, be careful' . Because the writer quotes the exact words.

That's direct speech; in indirect speech it would be:
His daughter said that her mother had told them to be careful.
