    Default Hear somebody do/doing

I often hear my next door neighbor play the piano.

I often hear my next door neighbor playing the piano.

I would like to know whether both are proper English, but the first one is better. Thank you.

I would you the second rather than the first. because it's an action that's going on (you can hear him so he's playing the piano.)

    I'm not a teacher.

As I understood the grammar, you can use both structures in such a case.
But I don't know which one is better and why.

    Thank you.

Someone argues that if we see 'often' is used, the sentence stresses a regular ocurrence rather than an on-going action, like:

'I often see him take No. 3 Bus' rather than 'I often see him taking No.3 Bus'.

'I saw him taking No. 3 Bus yesterday' rather than I saw him take No. 3 Bus yesterday'.

Please advise if my understanding is correct or not.

    They are both equally correct.
