    Default Grammatical role of "NOR"

Most dictionaries and books say that "nor" is a conjunction. A few grammarians say it is an adverb that focuses on a particular item in its sentence. Would a teacher please enlighten me. Thank you.

Nor is a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS), which, more often than not, is used correlatively with neither.
