I read the sentence below on a blog, and thought the "a" before "76ers" should be replaced by "the."
But he was on a 76ers team that beat the Hornets in the first round of the 2003 playoffs.
Am I right?

Yes, because there was only one specific team that did that. Using "a" implies there was more than one.
Maybe the blogger didn't understand the distinction.
