What does ANALOG mean?

The word analog has various definitions, depending on the context in which it is used.

As I understand it, analog is like a traditional clock, where the position now is viewed in relation to the past, as progress, while digital is like a digital clock where every change replaces the state that came before. I don't really know much about the implications of this. ;-)
