a. I am sorry to have caused any trouble.
Does this mean: I am sorry if I have caused any trouble.
It does sort of imply that I haven't really caused any trouble, doesn't it?
Often when people are apologising, they do this to try to lessen the impact of their wrong actions. Prince Harry, who caused a scandal by wearing a Nazi uniform to a party, apologised for any offence he 'may have caused', even though he knew full well that many people were disgusted with his actions.![]()
