    Is the word “alas” the same as “unfortunately”….can I use them indistinctively?

    I am not a teacher, but I think it is more used in poetry and it is more archaic than the word "unfortunately". It is also more common in modern English than "alas". But again I may be wrong. I am just a student like you.
