Default about tense

Dear teachers,

I was watching friends the other day (episode 223). Here is a scene where Monica is talking with her boyfriend Richard about her "
cute little obsessive things".

MONICA: You would not. I can't believe this. I hate this, you're too normal. I can't believe my boyfriend doesn't have a thing. My boyfriend doesn't have a thing.

RICHARD: See, if anyone overheard that, I didn't come off well.

First, it seesm that Monica's words have another meaning or something, which I don't know.
Second, why richard uses "past tense"? Why wouldn't he say "See, if anyone overhear that, I won't come off well"?

thanks

I didn't come off well
= it didn't sound very good.
My boyfriend doesn't have a thing. - someone could think she was talking about his "organ" (lulu?) ...medically speaking: his penis.. :)
