Just another small "was vs. have been" question
To be honest I still have problems with this topic.
(But not as many problems as before, I guess...)
I always ask myself when a match ends.
Let's say you play soccer and lose.
As soon as the match ends, you say:
"Damn, we have been defeated."
The problem is that the match has already ended.
That means I could imagine that:
"Damn, we were defeated."
would be the right sentence.
Now let's say the match has not ended, just the 1st half.
"Damn, we have been defeated so far, let's hope we'll strike back in the next half."
Now I'm confused because you cannot be defeated when a match has not ended.
Help me out, please
Re: Just another small "was vs. have been" question
After completion of the match you have the choice to use either present perfect or simple past.
