1) Does the structure "something else other than" exist?

2) Is it better to say "short after" or "shortly after"? For instance, short after/shortly after he arrived, he called someone".

3)This film is great. It's kind of magic. (Would it be better to say "it's a kind of magic").

1 the structure 'something else other than' does exist.
e.g. Can you give me something else other than money?
this sentence can be used when a child whose father always offers money and doesn't pay much attention to the mental communication.In this situation, the son can say it to his father.

2 ' shortly after' is better, which means 'soon' or ' a short moment later'
Shortly after he arrived, he told me the good news.
Here ' shortly after' can be replaced by ' as soon as'.
3 here 'kind of' means 'a little'
so we can not replace it as ' a kind of'

1) Yes but 'else' is redundant unless used for emphasis
2) short after = wrong, not English; shortly after = correct
3) no 'a' - magic (adj) = wonderful, amazing; magic (n) = what magicians perform. In any case, I wouldn't use 'magic' to describe a film - there are many, more preferable superlatives you can use
