Default conversely/in contrast/on the contrary/apparent/

Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

Steady flow exits if the velocity at a point remains constant with respect to time. Convesely, unsteady flow exists if the velocity changes either in magnitude or in direction with respect to time.

If an air mass is moved from a position near the ground to a higher position, the reduced surrounding pressure results in an expansion, which in turn causes a cooling of the air. Conversely, if an air mass is brought to a lower elevation of greater pressure, it is compressed and the temperature increases.

conversely = in a converse manner; with change of order or relation; reciprocally

The natural tendency of heat to flow form from a higher to a lower temperature makes it possible for a heat engine to transform heat into work. On the contrary, a mechanical refrigerating machine must transfer heat from a colder to a hotter body.

on the contrary = exactly the opposite; rather; instead

In contrast to their neighbors, they live modestly.
Why most beatle songs are easier to cover, in contrast to Purple, Floyd, Crimson, Zeppelin and Sabbath?

The principles of dynamics had been summed up by Newton as early as 1687. In contrast, the other pimary branches of physics-heat, light, electricity, etc.-did not begin to assume their modern formd until the nineteenh century.

contrast = comparison, confrontation

It was apparent to the naked eye.

The great apparent discrepancy between the two Chroniclers is merely evident.

About twenty very bright stars are said to be of first magnitude, the stars of the sixth magnitude being just visible to the naked eye; called also {visual magnitude}, {apparent magnitude}, and simply {magnitude}.

apparent = visible

For all his apparent wealth he had no money to pay the rent.

apparent = appearing as such but not necessarily so; seeming

The effects of the drought are apparent to anyone who sees the parched fields.

It is apparent that no lifetime is long enough in which to explore the resources of a few square yards of ground.

apparent = clear, obvious

In recent years the value of infra-red analytical methods has become apparent to industry.

In energy changes are followed backward in the past, it becomes apparent that almost all the energy available to us has come ultimately from a single source-the sun.

Centrifugal force is only an apparent force, which arises because of the tendency of moving objects to travel in straight lines.

Apparent movements of the planets are explained as combinations of their actual motions around the Sun and our sshift of position as the Earth moves.

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

The great apparent discrepancy between the two Chroniclers is merely evident. {OK - but "great" should not be in this sentence}

About twenty very bright stars are said to be of first magnitude, the stars of the sixth magnitude, being just visible to the naked eye; called also {visual magnitude}, {apparent magnitude}, and simply {magnitude}. {This might be correct - I do not know what a sixth magnitude star is called}

Centrifugal force is only an apparent force, which arises because of the tendency of moving objects to travel in straight lines. {Sounds fine but I don't know if centrifugal force is considered an apparent force}

Some of these sentences require an intimate knowledge of astromony. They may or may not be correct depending on how this science uses certain terms.

Hi Gillnetter,

Thank you for your precision emendations. They stand me in good stead.

Here is a brief explanation of the term “sixth magnitude”.

The stars cataloged by Ptolemy (2d cent. A.D.), all visible with the unaided eye, were ranked on a brightness scale such that the brightest stars were of 1st magnitude and the dimmest stars were of 6th magnitude.

V.
