If an air mass is moved from a position near the ground to a higher position, the reduced surrounding pressure results in an expansion, which in turn causes a cooling of the air. Some of these sentences require an intimate knowledge of astromony. They may or may not be correct depending on how this science uses certain terms.

Here is a brief explanation of the term “sixth magnitude”.

The stars cataloged by Ptolemy (2d cent. A.D.), all visible with the unaided eye, were ranked on a brightness scale such that the brightest stars were of 1st magnitude and the dimmest stars were of 6th magnitude.
