Default Verbal English

Hello, I am currently on holiday in NYC from Holland. I always thought that my English would be good enough for other people to understand until I came to the US... My written English is good. The only thing I am having problems is, is with my Verbal English... People don't seem to understand everything I say. Perhaps something is wrong with my accent/the way I speak ?

What can I do about this ?

Thank you.

Speak with as many people as you can while you're on holiday. You'll possibly end up with a New York accent, but I guess that's the price you pay for free tuition.
