Default "What way are you?"

The folloing sentences are very difficult to understand for me.

"There's something in the poem which says you find a phrase 'as in the wild earth(?? This word is missing in the script. Some word which starts with ea-) are Grecian Days'. So I hit upon the idea of saying "What way are you?" to different country people and the variety of answers I got was really something Lovely."

Especially I can't understand "What way are you?" part. Is it a common phrase?
Could someone help me to understand that?

No, it isn't. It doesn't make much sense to me either.
