Prepositions are "anything a cat can do". For example, up, down, over, under, in, out, and so on. In English, prepositions (note the prefx "pre-") come before the noun they modify. They are pre-positional. Together, the preposition and the noun it modifies form a prepositional phrase, and that phrase generally functions as an adverb. Adverbs tell us when and where:

I had lunch at 5:00. (Form: Prepositional Phrase; Function: Adverb (When?))
I had lunch under the tree. (Where?)
