It's from a book about ghost hunters:

With all the places we've been and the magnitude of the investigations we've carried out, we still get the biggest jolt out of poking through someone's dark, dusty closet, or listening for voices in a damp basement at four in the morning.

--- I'm not sure what "poke through" means here? Maybe it means "peeking through from behind a closet"?
