Adjective- it modifies 'English'; the adverb would be in a different position: The people in the South of Great Britain speak English better than people in the North.

Only transitive verbs can be put into the passive. The verb BE (is, am, are, was, were, and so on) isn't transitive. It's a linking verb: Linking Verb + Adjective a) I am bored to death. b) I am bored with doing the same thing evry day Causative Verb: The long walk tired the child. (the walk caused the child to be tired.) Passive => The child was (made) tired by the long walk.

Thank you very much for your help,Casiopea. What is the difference between tired(1) and tired(2) in the following sentences: 1.The child was tired(1) by the long walk. 2.The child was tired(2) of the long walk. I mean which is an adj and which is a past participle? I am looking forward to your help again. Renzheng04
