Default axiom vs proverb

What is the difference between an axiom and a proverb ?
Or, to put it in another way,
When is an expression considered as an axiom and not a proverb
and vise versa ?
Thanks.

Default Axiom or proverb?

It's hard to say. Indeed, one of the synonyms for axiom is proverb.

An axiom is something widely recognised to be true, while proverbs are not always- many proverbs contradict each other.

So proverbs are not necessarily axiomatic?
