It isolates old people
They are often overmedicated and neglected
They have to adjust to a completely new environment at an advanced age

just a few words to add to Tdol's comments.

pros: if it's an old folks home with nursing staff available 24/7 then we know that caring for people with medical needs might be just too much for us and for that reason it's best for them to remain in a home. The families are still welcome to come and visit their close ones as often as they wish.
The quality of care we might wish to give our aging parents or relatives might not be what they really require. Raising our own kids, keeping our own jobs and running in hundred different directions all day long will simply rob them of the time, care and support they need.

cons: we have witnessed all kinds of abuses from aides yelling at patients and hitting them to cleaning staff stealing their possessions. It's been well documented and it's still happening today. One has to be extremely careful about choosing the right home.
