My confusion about verbs tense

Hi every one , I am studying English now . My teacher is native speaker . sometimes , she correct our mistakes in essay tell us to use verb was + verb with ed . How I use tow verb I know there are many diffrenet tenses in English and I know approximately all of them there is not any tense like this . When I asked her to explain that ,she told me it is difficult to understand that if you aren't native speaker . Do you mind explaining that to me ?

It's the passive. Here's an example: Dinner was served. I could say The waiter served the dinner, but I'm more interested in the dinner- I go to restaurants for the food not the waiters, so I can use the passive to focus on what is more important to me.
