Simile: Willow and Ginkgo
The willow is like an etching,
Fine-lined against the sky.
Then ginkgo is like a crude sketch,
Hardly worthy to be signed.
The willow’s music is like a soprano,
Delicate and thin.
The ginkgo’s tune is like a chorus
With everyone joining in.
Could anyone help me to explain the first 2 sentences?
thanks
Do you understand that the poem is about trees? An etching is usually made by pouring acid on glass or metal. By doing these, pictures or images can be made on the material. Now, imagine the willow tree seen against the sky - the outlines of the tree are clear, like an etching.
