Looking for an equivalent in English

Hi. I was asked by a friend if I could give her the equivalent for a Spanish idiom and honestly, my mind went blank. I've gone over my notes, my dictionaries, the net, but still no satisfying answer.
The idiom is the following:

• El diablo sabe por diablo pero más sabe por viejo.

Literally, it means that the devil knows about things because he's the devil, but he knows more because he's old. The meaning of this idiomatic expression is that one knows more about life from experience given by age and not necessarily from being a professional. I've found several versions of literal translation, but I keep thinking there's a more specific idiom.
