I can't get past what we had

It sounds to me like there was something unpleasant in your past between the two of you and it's still causing him grief(?)/bad feelings(?)/hurt(?), etc. He doesn't seem to be able to go past that stage and just continue on with the relationship.

...or perhaps the relationship reached the level where there is nothing else to look forward to, he can't see it going anywhere.
