There is no firm formula -- do what suits you best.
Read a lot, write down unfamiliar words, then try to memorize them by connecting those words with some context (I would not recommend learning new words by rote -- it's very likely that they will tend to escape your memory if you don't use them in practice.)
Study the grammar. Find a partner you can talk to. If there's no one available, you can talk (or think) to yourself or make up stories.
To get a clue on the right pronunciation listen to the songs, watch TV.

In any case, the best way to improve something is to constantly practise.
