As the other posters have already explained, "them" refers to "2 existing submersible pumps". Why did you think it should have read "its"?

I don't know much about grammar I think that because

I ----> me (people) you----> you (people) we ----> us (people)
he,she----> she(people) they----> them (people) it---> it (object)

I,you,we,she,he,they use for people but it use for object (Table,Book,Pen) and I think submersible pump is object, Now I know I think is wrong. So I can use them with object right. I would like to learn more about this cause if whom have website to explain this cause please give me.

For objects, we use it ---> they --- > them.

A submersible pump is an object, therefore:

I have one pump. I am going to clean it.
I have two pumps. They are dirty. I am going to clean them.
