The chauffeur, who had been opening something, turning something, shutting something, got on to the box.
got on to the box = took his seat

Thank you for your precise modification. I agree with it, but I am only an unobtrusive translater of the Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dallaway”. I have to stick rigidly to the original and to take things as I find them.
