Default got on to the box

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The chauffeur, who had been opening something, turning something, shutting something, got on to the box.

got on to the box = took his seat

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

I guess this would make sense if the chauffeur was driving a wagon pulled by horses. This would mean that the driver's seat was called a box. I don't believe that, "got on to the box" is correct - maybe, "got on the box".

    Hi Gillnetter,

Thank you for your precise modification. I agree with it, but I am only an unobtrusive translater of the Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dallaway”. I have to stick rigidly to the original and to take things as I find them.

Thank you again for your kindness.

    Regards,

    V.
