ad hoc = for the specific purpose, case, or situation at hand and for no other/ improvised and often impromptu

Martin Gardner reports on this type of ad hoc hypothesizing reaching a ludicrous peak with para-physicist Helmut Schmidt who put cockroaches in a box where they could give themselves electric shocks.

ad hoc hypothesis = a specific hypothesis put forward for the interpretation of the case or a separate phenomenon/ the assumption is adopted specifically to describe or explain the specific phenomenon and not systematically related to the previous knowledge of it
