1. What does 'tried' mean? (Helena was a fragile woman, of little staying power, physically or morally, and since the time that he had originall known her−−eight or ten years before−−she had been severely tried.)

2. What does 'younger horseman's nicety' mean? (He told his man to saddle the mare, booted and spurred himself with a younger horseman's nicety.)

3. What does 'jack−o'−lent' mean? (Can a jack−o'−lent believe his few senses on such a dark night, or can't he?)

4. What does 'had not missed them' mean? (In conversing with her on their way home the boy who walked at her elbow said that he hoped his father had not missed them.) (Father is ill and at home.)

5. What does 'yielded the point' mean? (Presently his arm stole round her waist. She gently removed it; but he placed it there again, and she yielded the point.)

6.What does "the instinct to specialize a waiting emotion on the first fit thing that came to hand" mean? (But he was a man she had never seen, and that all that moved her was the instinct to specialize a waiting emotion on the first fit thing that came to hand did not, of course, suggest itself to Ella.)

I think missed in number 4. means the speaker hoped that father had not died before they got there.

For number 6, think of a waiting emotion like an angry person waiting for something to be angry at.

One could take the emotion, anger, which has been waiting and specialize it toward a teacher (the fit [appropriate] thing ) who thinks that decoding this twaddle will help one learn English.

4. Yeilding the point means to give up an argument and admit your opponent is right.
