Hello, Abdoss.
(1) The so ... that construction (kind of sentence) is very
popular in English:
It was so expensive that I couldn't afford it.
It is so hot that you can fry an egg on the sidewalk.
He is so smart that he finished college by the age of 15.
**********
I do not think that too .. that is "good" English.
You can say:
It was too expensive for me to buy.
I couldn't afford it because it was too expensive.
Thank you
Dear TheParser, thank you very mutch for your answering.
I agree with you. And i was sure that "so..that" is the right answer. But, i need a proof to convince my teacher who teachs me ( I have just started my preparation for TOEFL). His answers ( My teacher ) are :
1)The one in the window was too expensive that i couldn't afford it.
2)The cookies that you sent over were too good that i ate themm all.
His explanation (i mean my teacher) :
Very = neutral ( i think he is right)
So = Intensifies with possibility ( I think "so..that" is used to show extremes that lead to certain results. << )
Too= Intensifies with impossible ( I have never seen "too..that" in English language. I think "Too" is used to show that there is an excessive which is uncontrolled.)
So am i right ??? or my teacher
(By the way, my teacher passed his TOEFL test in texas not here in morocco)
Thank you again TheParser

Thank you very mutch euncu (our teacher). I will try to avoid those stupid mistakes...
Thank you again

hello,Gillnetter
Yeah you are right,my teacher needs a teacher.
I also need a teacher. But,I'm not afraid as long as you are with me.
I realy dont want to disturbe you.But it seems that I have a lot of questions( because i'm beginner and English is the third language in my country..)
Is "so..that" formal expression or informal ?
Thank you very mutch for your helping
Hi,Gillnetter
My questions are endless
First, thank you for your answering .
Second,I see that you didn't understand, I meant the "so ... that " construction. For examlple ;It was so expensive that I couldn't afford it.
Is it acceptable in TOEFL exam ? Is there anything grammatically wrong with this usage?
I know that The conjunction so (often followed by that ) introduces clauses both of purpose ( I went to the store so that I could buy milk) and of result ( The river had frozen during the night so people walked across it all the next day )
Thank you again ..

Hello, Abdoss.
(1) YES, the so ... that construction is PERFECT English. It is SUPER PERFECT!!!
(2) How hungry are you?
I am SO hungry (that I could eat a horse). (That's a joke in the United States.)
"That I could eat a horse" is an adverb clause that modifies the adverb "so."
*****
Here are some other examples that I found in my grammar books:
How hot was the engine?
It was SO hot (that the car would not run).
How fast did she speak?
She spoke SO fast (that nobody could understand her).
**********
Please remember that native speakers often delete (drop) the "that" in
conversation:
How cold was it?
It was SO cold (that) we stopped playing.
Since you are a learner, I respectfully suggest that you always use "that."
THANK YOU
P. S. Congratulations on understanding the use of the conjunction "so that" in clauses of purpose and result. I think that many native speakers (especially younger people) do not
understand it too well.
