I think "8 of us" doesn't mean it makes a group, isn't it ? Maybe it means "we have 8 ones at least but no any group".
And "a group of 8 of us" means "we have a group at least and the group mentioned here has 8 ones".
Am I right ?

I agree that if you simply said "8 of us from the Agency went...", it could simply mean that 8 people who work for the same Agency all happened to go to Cannes, but not necessarily together.
"A group of 8 of us..." shows that the 8 people all went together, and included the writer.
