    My hobby is bowling.
    or
    My hobby is playing bowling.
    Which is the correct one?

    A noun can be a subject or an object. I don't understand the title of your thread.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Yes.

    I was bowling when you called and I never heard the phone ring.
    Bowling is my favorite hobby.

    Verb in the first, noun in the second.
