EX: Only Max (and no one but Max) can make a tree.
"Only" is a limiting adverb. It adds extra information to the verb, which in this case is the making of a tree. That act can be done, but only by one person, Max. Therefore, "Only" tells us that the process of making a tree is limited to one person, which makes it adverbial in function.
