| Learning a language is, I think, about learning to recognize patterns and about learning to be alert to inflections. It is also about acquiring good habits. :) |

| Good habits help- but the main aim is to communicate. The learner who is willing to try new things and to change things that don't work is the most effective learner. It's not just a list of rules in abook. It's a living thing- them embodiment of entire cultures and, as whl626 says, words are worth so much when you need them. |
