a pillar of society
Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?
Alfred said: “How are you, Father, did you have a good rest this afternoon?” “First rate – first rate. Dreamt about the old days! That was before I settled down and became a pillar of society.”
a pillar of society = an influential person
Thanks for your efforts.
Regard,
V
