Smile Adverbs

Hi
I teach literacy on a family learning scheme and have been challenged by my students questions relating to adverbs. We understand that adverbs describe a verb and can relate to how an action is done, when an action is done and where an action is done. So in a sentence such as;
'We searched the garden for the lost ball.', is garden a noun or an adverb? Hope someone out there can help.
Thanks

Default Re: Adverbs

In your example "garden" is a noun and its function in the sentence is the direct object of the transitive verb "search".

If we were to insert an adverb in the same sentence, we could do it like this:

'We thoroughly searched the garden for the lost ball'

In the above example, the adverb "thoroughly" describes the verb "searched" by determining how the search was performed.

Hope the above helps.

TeeKay
