"She was a pretty woman with brunette hair swept into a lacquered flip, and her dark eyes were sad."

What is a "lacquered flip"? Is it a kind of hair pin?

No- the hair is held in place by spraying it with lacquer. Think 'Margaret Thatcher' and you'll know what lacquered hair is.
