1- This suggests that the peace you found was not at home and prior to returning- everything was OK after the fight at work, say. Also, I'd put the 'finding' part at the beginning.

1- I returned home, finding everything in peace.
2- Finding everything in peace, I returned home.

They're two a tad different pictures floating in my brain. The first one is she returned home and then, she found peace in mind. Tranquility floods her heart. However, the second one tells that she first found everything in peace. She thinks it's about time to return home, sweet-home.

I understand what you said. "He returned home, finding his neighbor's house on fire." In this sentence, he did go back home but his house was just fine. Instead, he found his neighbor's house was on fire.
