| | * Delete where appropriate Should it be:
Delete where appropriate
OR
Delete where inappropriate
??
What I want to say is to ask people to delete the information which is not appropriate. |

A bit of a logical dilemma, eh? Normally we would write 'delete where appropriate', i.e. delete in cases where deletion is appropriate. If the deletee (to coin a word) is an inappropriate phrase, however...hmm.... I think the better part of valour is to write your intention out more completely:
Delete [word or phrase] where you consideer it appropriate to do so.
or
Delete where the [word or phrase] is inappropriate.

| | Re: * Delete where appropriate Both "delete where appropriate" and "delete as appropriate" confuse me.
Today the bank sent me a form and there is such selection under the place of signatures on the form.
-------------------------------------------
Sole Trader/Partner/Director/Secretary*
*Delete as appropriate
-------------------------------------------
Since signatures are plural, I took delete where appropriate finally.
I am a director, so I deleted "director".
I think if the company secretary also signs the form, he should delete "secretary".
Right or not? |

Wrong. If you are the Director, that is the one to keep. Delete the inappropriate titles. Delete as/where appropriate = delete the ones it is appropriate to delete.

Many thanks.
But I regret that I just sent the form to the bank 10 minutes ago... |

What I want to say is to ask people to delete the information which is not appropriate, or to mark the information which is appropriate. |

Teia, I would keep the 'to do so'.
Meineliebe, I would state it clearly and avoid confusion: 'Delete inappropriate information' or 'Circle the appropriate options'. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
