"create itself from nothing" : this means that before the universe existed, there was nothing. Nothing existed. However, from that "nothing", the universe created/made itself.
"something rather than nothing" : here, "rather than" means "instead of". If spontaneous creation did not happen, then there would still be nothing in existence. However, because spontaneous creation does happen, we have "something" (the universe), instead of "nothing".
