    Default both

Each floor had ten rooms on both sides of the hall.
How many rooms are there on each floor altogether?(I guess 10?)

I say 20. Ten on one side, ten on the other.

The English is not clear, however.

    It should say either:

"Each floor had ten rooms on either side of the hall." = 20 rooms

"Each floor had rooms on either side of the hall, ten in all." = 10 rooms

You can also say 'on each side' of the hall.
