| Competence means what the learner knows. If they make a mistake that they know is wrong, that is a performance error, not a competence error. Communicative competence would be assessed by their ability to communicate their message, where this would be more important than any mistakes. If a student is givenm a task and performs it, they are showing communicative competence, but may not be speaking accurately. :P |
