"Don't mourn hair that hasn't even been lost yet. Who knows, maybe your ends won't split after all."
The speaker said to a girl, her friend, who has cancer and is going to start chemotherapy. The girl is very sad because she doesn't want to lose her hair.
I don't follow the underlined part. I think the speak is making a kind of joke to cheer her up, but I don't know what it means exactly. Please help!!!

"Split ends" are a condition when the hairs separate at the end. Yes, it's an attempt at humor.
