"the darkness" or "the dark"
When I was reading an English textbook, I came across these phrases in the same passage: in the darkness of night, in the dark of the night.
Is there any difference between these two phrases, or is either of them ungrammatical?
If these phrases convey the same meaning, why do you think the author discribed the same meaning differently--- especially, I wonder if you can use the word "dark", which is an adjective, with definite article.
Thanks in advance.

They convey the same meaning.
