I was told that in this senetence it means to end a quarrel. I've been looking it up in a number of dictionaries but haven't come up with that definition yet. The only meaning that comes close to this definition, that just came to my mind, is " they never became friends".

They 'did not make up' means that they did not become friends again after they had argued.

And then they did not meet/see each other again.

Also, a girl will put on her "makeup" to make herself look prettier, so you might say: "She was made up like a beauty queen".

OK, as an author you need that as a handy professional tool. But for learners it is interesting to write a little bit without those conveniences, at least at some stages of learning.

Anyway, since the work exists, "tanks" would not usually be detected by text processors as a typo.
