Are these two correct?

"He hardly went to bed when somebody knocked on the door."

OR

Hardly did he go to bed when somebody knocked on the door."

Can we put hardly at the begining of a sentence?

Neither of those sentences works for me- I would use Hardly had he gone to bed.... I'd use hardly/scarcely with the past simple for things like They hardly spoke during the meeting.
