read sb. a story
John read Mary a story. = John read a story ___ Mary.
Which preposition should I use to fill in the above blank, to or for?

Re: read sb. a story
- 'for' is 'on someone's behalf'. For example, this morning I read an essay for my daughter. She had asked me to read it, so that I could help her understand it. But I didn't read it to her; in fact she's a two-and-a-half hours' drive away.
