thanks for telling me if the following sentence is correct, and if not, why and how to make it correct.

I have forgotten where I put my keys.

I would say I forgot where I put my keys. I don't think I can say why. Just sounds better.

There is nothing grammatically wrong with this sentences, but the way Marylin wrote it is more common. Using the perfect tense in this sentence is more formal, I think.

In BrE, the present perfect would be more common if we don't have the keys now- it's one of those continental tense shifts.
